Great question!

Rope longevity is quite subjective, as it largely depends on how it is used, what sorts of damage to which it may be exposed, and the kinds of loads to which it is subjected. While some data suggest that unused, properly stored nylon ropes such as this can retain strength properties for more than a decade, we also know that the material can be damaged in a single instance by such things as heat, abrasion, cutting, and high loads.

For this reason, we suggest that users be trained by a competent person and establish good control procedures for using, storing, and inspecting life safety rope. Most reputable professional rescue and rope access courses cover such information, and it is also recommended to gain experience under the tutelage of an experienced rope technician over time.

ASTM F1740-96 Standard Guide for Inspection of Nylon, Polyester, or Nylon/Polyester Blend, or Both Kernmantle Rope, provides excellent information and guidance on rope inspection.

At PMI, we recommend inspecting rope before each use as well as a more thorough periodic inspection, in accordance with regulatory and standards guidance. All PMI Ropes (including 12.5mm Extreme Plus) are provided with sample rope inspection logs, where such information can be recorded for ongoing reference.

While we would love to be able to provide a definitive lifespan, the fact is that longevity is largely dictated by the nature and environment in which rope is used. If you have further or specific questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.
